Improving our Environment

Caring for God’s Creation…
as stewards of our environment

At Highlands United Methodist Church, we commit to green-businessembrace our responsibility as stewards of the environment. Through this commitment, we seek to honor God’s covenant with all creation.

The Green Team is a group of church and community members dedicated to this goal.  Thanks to the efforts of our members, we are proud to be Denver’s first church listed as a “certifiably green business“.  Learn more about Highlands UMC becoming a green church here.

Get Involved!

We offer many exciting opportunities to make a difference in our community and environment, including:

Highlands Harvest

In the late summer and early fall, we harvest fruit and vegetables from Northwest Denver neighborhood trees and gardens. We then donate it to local food banks. We’d love your donations from your own yards, or you can help by identifying neighbors with fruit trees that would be willing to donate some or all of their fruit. In addition, you could help harvest for neighbors who are willing to donate but physically unable to harvest.  If you would like to donate fruits or veggies, drop them just inside the Osceola St. door at the eastern entrance of the church in the designated bin. Church volunteers will take them directly to Denver Urban Matters Choice Food Pantry for you.

Bike-to-Church Day

Find a greener way to get to Sunday morning worship services by biking, walking, or carpooling to church.  Look for several of these events throughout the year on the church calendar, or see the Green Team calendar to the right.

Green Classes

We offer classes regularly to our church and the community on a range of topics, including stewardship of our environment, beekeeping, gardening, and other related topics.  Check out our calendar at the right for upcoming classes, activities, and other opportunities. If you would like to be hands-on with our ongoing efforts, you can find opportunities here.

Coffee Hour

Here at Highlands UMC, we’ve committed to a totally landfill-free coffee hour. We use ceramic mugs and dishes, and compost all of our food and paper waste. Green Team members and other volunteers work hard to make this a possibility. Interested in volunteering for clean-up? Please email the Green Team if interested.
