Music at Highlands UMC

Here at Highlands United Methodist Church, we are building an inclusive and vibrant music ministry. Whether you’re looking for a long-term musical community or just want to try out one of our groups, we’d love for you to join us and experience the music we make together. All are welcome to join us on Wednesday evenings for rehearsal (see below for the schedule). Or, if you’d like more information, email our choir director. See below for all musical opportunities, and we hope you’ll come make music with us! Please note: We are currently in our summer season of special music. Please email us at if you’d like to be involved!

Chancel Choir (September through May)

Our Chancel Choir is open to ALL who love to sing! We rehearse on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30pm, and on Sundays at 9am. Each week, we prepare an anthem to share during 10am Sunday worship. We strive to underline the message of the week’s sermon in each piece we sing, and our goal is musical excellence in our offering to God and to the congregation. We enjoy singing a wide variety of music, including Baroque and classical choral pieces, traditional hymn arrangements, spirituals, and contemporary sacred music. This season, we’ve sung a combination of old and new, including works by Antonio Vivaldi, Moses Hogan, Mack Wilberg, Bob Chilcott, and John Rutter. Now is the perfect time to join the fun! Simply show up to rehearsal, or email us.

Hand Chimes (Advent & Lent)

The Hand Chimes group provides music for the special liturgical seasons of Advent (leading up to Christmas) and Lent (leading up to Easter). We rehearse on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7pm, and on Sundays after worship from 11 to 11:30am. Each week, we prepare one piece to share during 10am Sunday worship. Each member rings one or two hand chimes (ANYONE can play!), and parts are very clearly laid out and easy to read. We could always use more ringers! If you’d like to join, simply come to a rehearsal (listed above), or email us.

Special Music

We feature special music from a variety of talented musicians year-round, whether they be ensemble members or other musicians in the congregation. From viola to singing to folk guitar, there’s room for every kind of musical gift. Anyone interested in offering special music is encouraged to talk to the choir director (see email links above). There are countless opportunities for special music, and our choir director will help you to find one that suits you.
