Prelude and Bringing in the Light

Call to Worship

One: Hosanna, loud hosanna!
All: Our voices ring in praise!
One: For enters Christ the Savior!
All: So our palms we raise!
One: Hosanna, loud hosanna!
All: With joy our voices ring!
One: We welcome Christ the Savior,
All: and all this week will bring…

Hymn of Praise “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” UMH 278 v 1 & “Who Is He” W&S 3082

Hosanna, loud hosanna
the little children sang;
through pillared court and temple
the lovely anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them,
close folded to his breast,
the children sang their praises,
the simplest and the best.

Who is He who comes in triumph?
Who is He who comes to die,
Comes in peace and comes in power,
Hidden One now lifted high?
Jesus, Jesus, Lord, Messiah,
Mighty master of the grave!
See Him ride, the King of Glory!
God Himself has come to save!

See Him there in humble splendor.
Hear them shouting all around.
Joy explodes in wild procession.
Praise is now the victor’s crown.
“Glory, glory in the highest!”
Like the angels hear them sing,
Dancing round the Long-awaited –
Once their hope, and now their King.

Rise and join the glad procession!
Hear them passing by again –
All the ransomed, all His children,
Marching to Jerusalem!
Look ahead?the gates of splendor!
Hear the everlasting hymn!
Open wide Your hearts in worship!
Let the King of Glory in!

Hymn of Preparation         “How Firm A Foundation” UMH 529

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.”

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.”

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.”

The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake!”

An Invitation to Holy Week

Sending Prayer

We lift our voices in praise, we welcome Jesus with exuberance! We join the crowds of Jerusalem in their excitement. But it is amazing how quickly things can change. For soon fingers will be pointed in accusation, voices will join in cries for crucifixion, and Jesus will be cast out of favor. Help us, O God, not to overlook the difficulty of this week and the challenges it brings. May we not simply move from excitement to excitement, but experience the depth of this Holy Week. Amen.

Hymn      “What Wondrous Love Is This”           UMH 292

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
what wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul.

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
what wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of life
to lay aside his crown for my soul, for my soul,
to lay aside his crown for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing,
to God and to the Lamb, I will sing;
to God and to the Lamb who is the great I AM,
while millions join the theme I will sing, I will sing;
while millions join the theme I will sing.
